Mad as a Wet Settin' Hen

Oh, I'm mad as a wet settin' hen! I called the doctors' office today to ask some questions about the baby, as she's still not much better. Her cough had increased overnight. Poor little thing coughs and coughs until she chokes. The nurse at the doctors office didn't seem too concerned about it. Said "the flu can last up to a week." I know this. I've been told this multiple times. I took her in Thursday with a fever. The flu virus didn't just hop on her Thursday and start showing symptoms. She had to have had it a bit before then. Is it just me being over protective of my little one, or is there really cause for concern? One eye is a bit swollen and just pours. It's constantly mattering up. The cough has gotten worse. (Oh, she said she would call in some Acuhist [sp?], but wasn't sure it would do much good...."the cough could last for weeks.") URG!!!!!! Normally, I'm pleased with the information I receive, but this time I'm not so sure.
It's so hard to see my little one so miserable. We're all miserable. No one is sleeping. Papa Rooster and I are not only sleepy, were just totally drained. I don't know if there's much left. It honestly feels like we're working off very little.
Please forgive my ill manners. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

  1. It's hard to see your children sick! I'm afraid the nurse is probably right though. From my experience in flu in little ones, it can often start with a fever, they may or may not have cold symptoms, cough and sometimes tummy problems. Where we may be able to get over it in about a week or so in infants it can last upwards of 2 weeks. The cough? Oh, my that can feel as if it has no end! That is just another reason they can often face complications such as bronchitis, pneumonia or ear infection. It seems to hang around longer for their little bodies.

Another thing that makes it hard is that there really is nothing to give them that will treat the root of the problem. You can just treat the symptoms as best you can and try to make them comfortable. Have you tried using a humidifier in her room? That gives my children (and us) tremendous relief when dealing with a troublesome cough.

Also two things to consider: 1.As annoying as the cough may be (and as tiring) it may be a good thing in that her body may be naturally clearing her lungs, keeping her from any worse illness. 2.Also the worsening cough may be a sign that it is trying to clear up. Do you ever get a tickle in your throat when you are beginning to get over a cold?
As for her eye, the congestion will tend to come out from everywhere if it is bad. (As in, runny eyes, runny nose, coughing to clear the chest, diaper (you know!),and even vomiting) I would watch for severe matting up, where it is hard for her to open it and red eye(s) that continually run green or yellow.

Try not to worry. It may be bad but the great thing about little ones is just pour on the TLC and they tend to get better faster than you could imagine - just in time for Mama and Daddy to get sick! Sorry for writing a book, just wanted to reassure! Call if you need anything - love you guys! :)

  2. Thank you. I was sure that it's just me, but I was wanting a bit more consoling I guess. And another thing, I was wondering if I needed to take her back after "X" amount of days. I just don't want this to turn into anything more serious.

Thank you so much. Oh, and don't worry about the "book", I enjoy hearing what you have to say. I always find some sort of peace in your words.
