Midnight Playdates

"Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him" Psalm 127:3 (NLT)

Being a mother has been the most wonderful, yet most challenging experience in my life.
After two years of trying to conceive, my husband and I were blessed with a beautiful daughter. Watching Chicken Little grow everyday is amazing. I realize that I take her for granted some days. Working full time, and getting home late in the evening leaves little time for play. Most nights she's ready for bed by 7:30 (if not earlier), giving us only an hour together. And most nights when she's up and down (we still don't sleep through the night), I must admit, that I tend to get very frustrated.
Now that I'm expecting again, I find myself very fatigued. That fatigue turned to exhaustion, then frustration, then to anger Tuesday night as Chicken Little awoke for the 5th time between the hours of 8:30 and 11pm. In my frustration/anger I decided to just move her to our bed, so that maybe--just maybe--I could get some much needed rest.
At 11:15pm I moved her into our bed, laying her gently between her daddy and me, she pops her little head up. (I swear at the time it was horned...lol) Her daddy receives a "Hey there", as she rolls back to me and nuzzles in close. Her little foot rested on my stomach--just under my belly button--creating just a tiny bit of pressure. Evidently it was just enough pressure to stimulate her "Bubba". I began to feel the baby moving toward her foot, rolling and swimming around. Just like that, any frustration I'd felt before was completely washed away. In that moment, God showed me just how precious my children were. For the child in my womb to respond to his/her sister was simply amazing. I held Chicken Little close, and she and "Bubba" played for an hour and a half. Chicken Little asleep the whole time, but "Bubba" was still playing with her.
This morning when Chicken Little woke up at 1:30am, I wasn't angry--I wasn't even frustrated. I simply went in, picked up my whining little girl and rocked her until she was sound asleep again. Kissing her on the head, I lay her down, and even lingered for a moment as she tucked her teddy bear under her arm and settled in.
This is my life. Mother, Wife, Sister, Daughter--Child of God. I felt His presence as I walked back to my own bed. Settling back in for the night I realized that most nights wouldn't be easy--especially with a second child on the way. Most nights I will probably be exhausted, and on those given nights my child(ren) will most likely be up and down. But even during those nights, I'll simply have to remind myself of the midnight playdate and the blessings that have been bestowed upon me and my beautiful little family!

A good leader leads by example

This morning, as the rain continues to pour from heaven, God continues to pour blessings into my life. I had a wonderful anniversary yesterday. I received the most wonderful gift from my loving husband. I collect Willow Tree Angels and yesterday I received a new one. Child of my heart.

Isn't it beautiful!?! And it was so unexpected!!!

So that's my anniversary story...on to other things... For the past two nights, Chicken Little has slept all night long. Well from 8:30-9:00pm to 4:00-4:30am, but I consider that all night. She's been waking up for a feeding at 4am and then joining us in our bed afterwards. You know, I always said my child would never sleep with me, but there is something so comforting about having my family all in one bed together. And besides, it's not like we don't have the room. So there we are, from left to right, Chicken Little, Mama Hen, and Papa Rooster. All curled up together. It just feels so RIGHT.

Then when I get up for my morning shower, there lays Papa Rooster and Chicken Little. And in that moment tears fill my eyes and I thank God for the beautiful family He's given to me. Yes, he let me borrow this family for our short time here. Just for me!! He really does love me, doesn't' He? He has entrusted this family to me, to honor Him through my love, care, devotion, and adoration I give my family.

As daddy wakes up baby, and they begin to play, I sit staring. Staring at this beautiful father-daughter bond that will hold fast for years to come. I can already see Chicken Little, 4-5 years old, following daddy around. Stepping in his footsteps. As she follows in those footprints we leave behind, I pray we are leading her down the path to God. I pray we are Godly parents and she learns from watching us. After all, Papa Rooster always says, "A good leader, leads by example."

I've never thought about it until now, but parenthood is a lot like marriage. You take the same vows....for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, until death do us part. A covenant entered under God. Something that needs continues work and devotion!!!

Showers of Blessings

Today Papa Rooster and I celebrate four years of wonderful blessings. Four years of marital bliss. Four years of still "getting to know one another". Four years of doing our best to please the other. Four years of happiness, trials, joy, pain...Four amazing, blessed years.

As I was driving to work this morning, I thought back to this day 4 years ago. I was up and rushing to get "beautiful" for my wedding. This was it...I was finally marrying the man of my dreams. And he has helped so many of my dreams come true.
Anyhoo, as I was driving the rain began to beat down harder and harder on my windshield. I could barely see. Once again, the rain took me back to that beautiful day. It reminded me of two things. First, in my (then) 18 years, I had never seen my Great-grand Mother shed one single tear. That day she stopped me in the aisle, stepped out, hugged me and shed such beautiful tears. I knew I was loved that day. Here I was, being shown love by my family, and being accepted with open arms into a new family. My heart pounded with joy.
The second thing the rain reminded me of was my actual wedding "night". Almost as soon as the wedding was over, as we were leaving, the rain began to pour. It rained and rained. My new husband and I went to our new HOME, as our honeymoon was postponed until June!! (Another story for another day). The winds and rain grew stronger and stronger, and because we lived in a mobile home, we decided it was best we spend the night at Papa Rooster's mother and father's home. What a joy that was!!!
Now I know most women are thinking, "there is no way I'm spending my wedding night at my mother-in-law's!!!", but it didn't bother me at all. Besides, I'd just been accepted into this family. That, and I wanted to be safe...LOL.
That was a night I'll never forget. NO, not for the reason's you're probably thinking. We we got there, I'll say 6ish pm or so (the wedding was at 2pm) and the WHOLE family was there. All 3 sisters-in-law, 2 brothers-in-law, 3 nieces, 1 niece's husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and 1 grandmother from each side of the family. Let's see...thats....(yes, I'm using my fingers)....15 of us total. 15 in a 5 bedroom house!!!! What a ball we had that night!!!! Sitting around talking, listening to the radio for weather reports and updates. I've never felt so much a part of a family!!! I was so happy as to have joined this family!!!!

Now four years later, we've added 2 more children to this family. There is another brother-in-law and a nephew who weren't with us that night. It sort of makes me want to do this again some time...

Four years later, and Papa Rooster and I have been through so much together. He is an amazing husband who is there for me whenever I need him. Taken care of me through 3 surgeries, two of which he had to take me all the way to Atlanta (and all who know him, knows he's a home-body), through trials and tears of trying to conceive, and through the birth of our child. I couldn't ask for someone to love, care, and adore me as much he does. He makes me proud to be a wife!!!
I know our story's not "special" in anyone else's eyes, but to me, it's the cream of the crop. I married my best friend and I thank God for him every day!!!!

Blessings of Children

I had such an enjoyable time last night at church. Green food everywhere. What fun!!! Despite the looks, everything tasted very good. I think my favorite was the Broccoli Cornbread. It was delicious!!!

I felt so loved last night. Chicken Little was in a particularly good mood and quite playful. She just smiled at everyone. This just made my heart smile. Then little Cornbread decided he'd spend a little time with me. Oh how my heart melted when he put that little head down on my shoulder and drifted soundly asleep. How sweet is was. Papa Rooster had Chicken Little, and I was rocking little Cornbread. And with all the other children and our church family there, it was just a little piece of heaven!

It was almost as good as Sunday during children's church. I felt 'extra' loved then too. As "Everybody's Mama" was teaching all the little children decided to sit in the back row with me and Chicken Little. Cornbread to my left, FlowerChild in my lap, Chicken Little to my right, Ladybug beside her, and two others beside them (we've got to come up with names for those other 2!!!). I felt like the Little Old Lady living in the Shoe!!!! It is such a blessing to know that I am an active part in so many other children's lives!!!! And it's such a blessing that I have so many people who are active in my child's life.
Whoever said, "it takes a village to raise a child", sure wasn't kidding. And what better village people than your church family.

So this morning, I'm thanking God for all the special people he has placed in mine and my family's lives. He has been and continues to be so very good to me!! I am one very blessed WOMAN!!!

Prayin' for a Chicken

Have you ever prayed for a chicken? I mean really prayed for a chicken?

I'm sure all of you from the south know a chicken farmer or two. Look anywhere in our neck of the woods and you're bound to see chicken houses. Papa Rooster is selling his chickens today, and praying for chickens is something that comes natural for us. It's as natural as you praying for your children. We pray from the time they're brought to us, to the time they leave. We pray for a good flock, with excellent livability, and heavy weights that bring in good money. Of course we both have full time jobs, but those birds are our livelihood. And if we don't get that good flock, we pray for the patience to deal and live through it.
I can see Papa Rooster now, walking the length of the chicken houses, praying for each chicken.
The sound is like no other. Just listen. Knock-knock-knock from the feed motors. You can hear the feed sliding into the pans. Cluck-cluck-cluck and an occasional cock-a-doodle-do from the chickens. Feathers rustling together as you shuffle through the sea of white. You can hardly move. Chickens are literally on top of one another, from wall to wall for 500ft. You can no longer see the floor. Be careful where you step, you don't want to harm one. That chicken just might bring you 50 cents if you're lucky. Papa Rooster stands amongst them, eyes closed, listening, thinking. I've heard you can tell a lot about your birds from just listening. He's standing there going over everything that needs to be completed, going over the things he's accomplished, and what he could be doing next (I'm sure of this), listening to make sure all is well.
The smell is not so bad. It is something you have to get used to, but it doesn't take long. It's only really bad during catching, clean out, and during the summer. Other than that it doesn't smell. That or I've gotten used to it.
Chickens take up quite a bit of time. They are in Papa Roosters hands for about 8 weeks, and after that, you're either cleaning up after them, or getting ready for the next flock. It's a constant cycle. This is job, not a hobby, but Papa Rooster enjoys is so much. He can go down and loose himself in the sea of white.....

Pray for a chicken today!!!!!

Getting Somethig Done

Work is slow today. It looks so dreary outside, so the day is creeping by. As I sit here awaiting the phone to ring, with absolutely nothing else going on, I'm reminded of all the things that await me at home. I have a TO DO list about a mile long, and I just can't seem to get anything marked off. I feel so guilty when I sit here at work (doing much of nothing) while there is so much to do at home.

Chicken Little has slept so well for the past two nights. Monday night she went down around 8 and slept until 4am. I didn't mind getting up with her, and I actually stayed up after that. Then last night, she was a bit ill. She's got a bit of this crud...just the stuffy nose. She finally gave it up around 7:30 and slept until 2:30 then went back down until 5. She was so peaceful went she got up this morning, smiling and cooing at mommy and daddy.

After supper, while she was sleeping, I should have worked more on my TO DO list, but for some reason I just can't get it done. I have been extremely fatigued for the past week or so. I feel almost exactly like I did when I first got pregnant...but I know for a fact that's not the case. I'm so tired in the evenings that I'm ready for bed by 8pm, and most of the time never make it past 9:30. Lately I've been asleep before Papa Rooster can get back from checking the chickens for the last time. I think I'll mention this fatigue to Dr. T tomorrow during my appointment.

This is my TO DO list that I can't seem to accomplish. My house is in dire need of Mama Hen's attention!!!!! Know of a good maid service? :)

1. Wash clothes. (washed one load last night)

2. Fold and put away laundry. (the desk next to the washing machine is beginning to buckle under the weight of our unfolded clothes. And I know Papa Rooster is tired of searching through the massive pile for a clean pair of underwear.)

3. Wash dishes. (I actually start this nightly, but never seem to finish. I get through the bottles and glasses and most of the plates, bowls and silverware, but can't quite make it to the pots and pans.)

4. Sweep kitchen. (at this time we could really use an inside dog to take care of the bits and pieces that are scattered across the floor. And "No Thank you" to ya'll at the Preacher's house. We have enough dogs thank you. It was just a thought, that's all....)

5. Change sheets on bed. Our bed that is. (this really needs to be done. There is no telling how many creatures are sleeping with us at night right now. But as tired as I've been lately, I'll gladly share, even scoot over for that matter. Just don't make me change the sheets }:0 )

6. Sweep laundry room floor. (I'm ashamed to say, but I'm glad we don't have much unexpected company sometimes, or they would have to trudge through the chicken litter piled up at the back door.)

Oh, and that reminds me, tomorrow is trash day. I need to empty the diaper genie and all the trash cans so Papa Rooster and take the trash out. So I guess that's number seven! And tonight is church night, so good luck house.

I'll go home, attempt some sort of supper, attend church, head back home, put baby to sleep, and sigh, because once again, I sleep in my

Ramblings from the CRAZED Chicken!!!!

Another day, another dollar, another day away from Chicken Little, another day away from my PLACE at home. But yet another day that the Lord has made, I WILL rejoice and be GLAD in it...no matter how difficult it is.
I have found that the past couple of days have just been UGH!!!! I don't know what it is, I just feel UGH!!!
I'm still having some post-pregnancy "annoyances" that are driving me batty!!! I can't seem to get an answer that I 'like'. Guess it's just one of those things I'll have to deal with and get over....
I miss being home with Chicken Little. She had shots yesterday. She was 11lbs 13oz and 24in long!!!! She's growing so much. I miss getting to see her as much every day. She did so well with her shots, but felt a little "puny" yesterday. I took the remainder of the day to stay home with her. I'm so glad I stayed home with her. I held her most of the day (so sue me for spoiling...LOL). She was just pitiful. Usually if she's awake, she's moving around trying to get a look at everything. Yesterday she was just so somber. Papa rooster even felt bad for her.
I think being at home with her on her puniest day, made me miss her so much more. I know mimi will take good care of her, but mommy should be the one who's there to make her feel better. How I wish things could be different......
It just seems every night is a mad house. Rush to pick her up, get home, settle her down, cook supper, eat, try to clean up a bit, laundry, bathe baby, put baby down for night, spend time with Papa Rooster, bed time, wake up early, make myself "presentable" for work, take her to mimi's, off to work, and the cycle begins again. There simply aren't enough hours in the day to accomplish all I would like. I would like to be able to spend more time with the baby and my husband. Saturdays and Sundays seem to fly by. With the two of us working all week, Saturday is the day we try to take care of things around the home, so there goes a bit of time together. Or if we're not taking care of things around the house, some type of errand has to be run, or we're with other family. Now don't get me wrong, I love enjoying time with other family and friends, but it's just unreal how days turn into mere hours. For instance, Saturday, I anxiously awaiting the arrival of some very dear people for supper, and once they arrived, our time with them seemed as if it had been only minutes. Then everyone is back in their whirlwind of a life.
My mother and father-in-law talk of a time when everything was much slower. Neighbors sat on each others' porches and rocked the day away. Oh, to live in a time such as that. Now we don't "have time" to sit and talk with dear friends. There is always one engagement taking place right after to other. No slowing down. So much must be done. It's a rat race and no one is winning.
My worst fear is waking up one morning and my child is grown. I'm afraid I won't know where the time went. She'll be moving out before I know it, and once again, it will be just me and Papa Rooster. Thinking of that, I don't know what I ever did before the baby. What filled my time? And what in the world filled my heart so? You know, this is the day that the Lord has made, I am rejoicing and am so glad, for he has blessed me in so many ways!!!!!!!!!!

Closing on NOT SUCH AN UGH! DAY AFTER ALL!!!!

Changes!!!

Our family is going through many changes this week. So far we've managed to change our eating place. Last night I cooked a nice meal, served it on my "good" dishes and even set the table with real dishes--sorry paper plates, maybe next time. Papa Rooster was very impressed with supper, which just made my day. I was going to even cook a little breakfast this morning, but Chicken Little had a bad night. Chicken Little slept until we were finished eating, then she joined us until bathtime. She didn't have such a good night, poor thing is just "gassy" and her little tummy hurts. So today we've CHANGED her bottles. Whew, she's getting expensive...I bought 3 different types of bottles: Dr.Brown's, Playtex Ventair, and Nuk. So far I've tried the Dr.B's and Nuk. She didn't care for the Nuk too much, so unless things change, there went $6 down the drain--or until next baby. She seems to be doing well with the Dr.B's so far, which tells me she's CHANGING!!! When she was born, her suck was so poor that the only thing she would take was the Playtex Drop-in nipple because it was wider. Now she's taking the smaller nipple with much more ease, which tells me she's growing stronger. She's still loosing a little milk while eating, but it's better that it was even 4 weeks ago!!!
Another big change in our life with happen Monday. Mommy starts back to work. How sad!!! I'm going to miss my little blessing. I'm trying to prepare myself this week for Monday. Trying to get us all into a routine is a bit more difficult than I imagined. We'll work through it, but it's going to take some commitment and prayer.

So with a bit of dedication and little extra "oomph" supper will be just as tasty and served with love again tonight, and who knows, Chicken Little may cooperate tonight and Papa Rooster and I can enjoy a bit of breakfast in the morning.

My little one's growing

What a day it's been!!! Last night Chicken Little still didn't feel so well, so she didn't sleep too much. Still just a little "whine-y". Papa Rooster was concerned about her this morning, so he asked that I take her to the doctor. Sure enough, the poor little chickee has the onsets of a cold.
I know now why I was "refered" to Dr. Fix-it. He and his staff are wonderful. To my surprise, the nurse and doctor remembered my little one--and she's only been in once before, on the 4th!!! I was amazed. They are all so nice!! Chicken Little weighed 10lb 10oz!!! She's getting so big. It's hard to believe she's gained almost 3 lbs in almost 7 weeks. Then again it's hard to believe that it's been almost 7 weeks. It's true time flies when you're having fun!! That little girl means so much to me. Papa Rooster and I prayed and prayed for her and after 2 years of praying and 9 mos of waiting, here she is, and it's passing much too quickly.
I return to work in a week and am not looking forward to it. I could cry just sitting here thinking about it. I used to think it would kill me to sit at home, but now as the baby's growing and changing so much, I would love to be here to see every milestone. I'm so afraid I'm going to miss out on all the "biggies". Just the other day, she drifted off during her bottle, and as I slowly took it from her mouth she chuckled--twice. I loved it, because that was the first time she's laughed out loud. This week she has begun to do so much. She's smiling when I play with her and beginning to coo back. When she's in her bouncer she "swats" at the toys above her. See, I'm going to miss all of these firsts when I go back to work.
As much as I would love to stay home, I know that it's just not practical for us at this time. And besides, Papa Rooster works another job besides the poultry houses, so if anyone can quit their job, it would make more sense for him to do so. I know he gets so tired of working the two jobs. He doesn't get to come in until after dark sometimes and between the two jobs, he doesn't get many free weekends. Now that I think about it, he's already missed some of those firsts--the laughing, smiling, playing... I can tell it bothers him sometimes. He voiced his concerns before Chicken Little was born, about missing out on her growing up. He's afraid he's going to come home oneday and she'll be grown. I pray that if it's in God's will that one day he will be able to be JUST a chicken farmer. He has so much going on that he becomes so tired and run down. I pray for him and his spirit. I know that working like he does can sometimes be a stressful. So as our little one continues to grow pray for us that we may be able to enjoy each moment with her, because I know that like the past 7 weeks, the next few years will pass just at quickly.
